Anime Recommendations: Top 5 For Spring 2017

Anime Recommendations: Top 5 For Spring 2017

With the first few weeks Spring over, Spring anime has also bloomed as well. By now each series has released at least one to two episodes, leaving the question, “Which ones will pique my interest?” Having now watched a good majority I am left with my top 5 series to watch for the spring. Long running titles such as One Piece and Gintama will not be on the list, but titles with less than 100 episodes still have a chance.
Disclaimer: Shingeki no Kyoujin will not be on my top 5 for a simple reason. The reasoning is that it’s adaptation to anime has been poorly done. When I first watched Shingeki no Kyoujin I too thought it had promise. Where it gets lost though, is in both its conversations and overdramatization. The reasoning behind this is that the release of the series was simply too early. With not enough manga content to continuously create episodes, an anime tries to stall time for the manga to catch up. However, even with the elongated conversations and extended dramatic sequences, it wasn’t able to save enough time. Now after an almost four-year hiatus the anime returns, without enough content to last a full 24 episodes the pacing has become slow. With only gore and well-animated scenes to keep you entertained, this isn’t my cup of tea.

5. TSUKI GA KIREI

So I have a soft spot for romance anime. Tsuki ga Kirei seems to epitomize this as it shows that two people with completely different mindsets can eventually meet. LINE, the number 1 message app in Japan is the main standard of communication between the two. Starting out slow, you are able to understand the troubles they go through and feel their emotions. The only downside I can see is that they are in their third-year of middle school. It may be a bit of a turn off to some, but I find it to be humbling in a sense.

4. YOWAMUSHI PEDAL

With the continuation of Yowamushi Pedal into the spring I still do consider it a spring anime. While not new, Yowamushi Pedal’s first season was incredibly enjoyable. You always want to cheer on Sakamichi through his struggles and can identify with him as an otaku. While a bit long for some, it is an entertaining sports anime that deserves some recognition.

3. UCHOUTEN KAZOKU 2

Yet another second season anime has appeared! Uchouten Kazoku is an interesting series combining both Japanese folklore with modern-day dynamics. The first season being relatively short is a bit more enticing, but you will find yourself drawn in either way. While it did a premiere in 2013, it was a title I instantly recognized when I saw it again.

2. NATSUME YUUJINCHOU 6

Natsume and Nyanko-sensei are back again with Natsume Yuujinchou 6. Yet another spirit related anime, there is a reason why this series keeps on coming back. When I saw the firstNatsume Yuujinchou I was still in High School. Even now, I find myself coming back to it though. While not action packed, its smooth storytelling and calming music will always be a hit in my book.

1. FUKUMENKEI NOISE

Both Tsuki ga Kirei and Fukumenkei Noise are the only true new releases from spring.Fukumenkei Noise however, had that “It” factor for me. It drew me in, wanting me to ask for more as I find myself still yearning. A music based anime (K-on club/Light music) as well as romance based, it does well at showing both aspects. Will it maintain the balance and be a true masterpiece or become bias to one-side, sinking the ship? Either way, I will continue to watch and enjoy the ride while I can.

Google Allo can now turn your selfies into cartoon stickers

Google Allo can now turn your selfies into cartoon stickers
Emoji and stickers are becoming more and more a part of how we communicate on a daily basis, and Google is getting in on the action with a new Allo feature that generates custom cartoon stickers out of selfies of you, according to Fast Co Design.
Google being Google, though, generating your emoji avatar isn’t just a customizable tool, like Nintendo’s Miis or Snapchat’s Bitmoji. Instead, Google’s version implements machine learning and neural networks to map your facial features to animated versions designed by artist Lamar Abrams, which can then be customized further. The finished product is a variety of different stickers featuring your newly minted cartoon doppelgänger to use in future Allo chats.
Looking at Google’s research blog reveals some interesting methodology behind the seemingly simple integration, as the company describes the efforts it had to take to avoid the uncanny valley and ensure that people of all races, genders, and ages were represented across the generated illustrations.
The new selfie-to-sticker tool should be rolling out today for Allo on Android, with an iOS release coming soon.

That New Thor Trailer Proves Marvel Really Knows What You Want

THE FIRST TRAILER for Thor: Ragnarok opens not with a bang, but with a wink: the Norse god of thunder in chains, cracking wise. “I know what you’re thinking,” he deadpans in the voiceover. “How did this happen?” Thor might be smart, but in this case he’s wrong. What you’re actually thinking is:Is that a joke? In a Thor movie? Followed closely by Wait, is that Zeppelin?! The answer to these questions—because this is Marvel, and Marvel has deconstructed CinemaScore in its test kitchen so many times that it can turn Ant-Man into a half-a-billion-dollar juggernaut—is an emphatic “yes.”
Yes, Chris Hemsworth builds on his Ghostbusters comic turn to bring a little levity to Mr. Mjolnir Risin’. Yes, the Ragnarok trailer begins with the churning riff of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song.” While the classic rock anthem functions as a punchline of sorts, with its Thor-adjacent lyrics about battles royale and “the hammer of the gods,” though, it also calls back to something far bigger. You may recall that in 2014, Marvel’s first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy used Blue Suede’s “Hooked on a Feeling” and a strong dose of goofiness to accomplish the impossible: getting people excited to see a movie about Star-Lord and a bunch of other obscure characters. The tactic succeeded so handily, in fact, that many an ensuing film has tried to copy it—and now, Marvel has realized that it can apply it to all of its MCU heroes, even the ones who have been kicking around the multiplex for years.
And in Thor’s case, that might actually be for the best. Even though the first Thor was one of the earliest installments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe—and the one that introduced audiences to Marvel’s non-Earthbound heroes—his standalone movies have always been the least vital. He doesn’t have the political intrigue of Captain America or the swagger of Iron Man. He’s just this preternaturally handsome god, you know? This trailer gives him a whole new look and cohort to go along with franchise stalwarts like Heimdahl (Idris Elba) and fan-favorite Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Not only does Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) make a surprise appearance, but we get our first looks at Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Hela (Cate Blanchett), the MCU’s first female primary villain.
Marvel has clearly taken a few other notes from its Guardians of the Galaxy strategy this time around, including something that the Thor movies have traditionally lacked: fun. Sure, the movies had laugh lines here and there, but by the time The Dark World came around in 2013, things had gotten a little self-serious. For Ragnarok, though, Thor seems to be heading to quirky-town, particularly when it comes to the trailer’s crescendo, a gladiator face-off with Hulk that prompts the Norse god to hoot, “We know each other! He’s a friend from work!” That move—upending an exceptional situation with day-to-day banality—is one of director Taika Waititi’s greatest strengths, and shows exactly what Marvel was thinking when it hired the guy behind vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows. Couple that sensibility with Guardians moves like brilliant tertiary casting (Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster is the Ragnarokversion of Glenn Close and John C. Reilly being in Nova Corps) and a little retro pop culture (Star-Lord’s ’80s mixtape, meet Ragnarok‘s new retro-game-influenced neon logo), and all of a sudden the prospect of a third Thor movie isn’t just tolerable, it’s straight-up exciting.
Marvel has always succeeded in part because of story-first institutional oversight, similar to that of other Disney holdings like Lucasfilm and Pixar. Like them, Marvel is a well-oiled machine. And now, like any good machine, it has finally become self-aware. It knows what you want, and it’s no longer holding back on delivering it. Even if it takes a little Ragnarok and roll.

'Clash of Clans' Short Continues to Tease the Upcoming Update, Even Has a 'Hamilton' Reference

Supercell continues to tease the big upcoming Clash of Clans[Free] update, and this time around it's with a short calledCaptain's Log Day 1. The star of the short is Hog Rider, who's in a boat with the others and hoping that in the new land he can be a new man, a possible nod to the famous line from the playHamilton. He doesn't want to be the hammer-wielding destroyer that he was anymore. Even though there's not much else in the short itself, Reddit users are, of course, speculating wildly. Most seem to agree that the new update will have something to do with going from Base to Base without having to change your accounts—which is where the whole idea of the boat comes in.

There's also the whole idea about reinventing myself, which who knows what it will be in terms of gameplay. Another suggestion is the possibility of merging different units together, but at this point everyone is speculating wildly. Any ideas guys?

Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ Gaming Performance Review

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ (review) are perhaps some of the most high profile smartphones launched in a while. For Asia, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and India, specifications include an Exynos 8895 octa-core SoC, Mali-G71 MP20 GPU, and 4GB of RAM. The US version has the same amount of memory, but it gets Qualcomm's MSM8998 Snapdragon 835 processor and an Adreno 540 GPU. According to our Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ review, the Exynos version has proven to be an absolute beast in terms of benchmarks.

A glitzy reveal promised support for VR, syncing with your appliances (if they’re from Samsung), and even Bixby (its bespoke digital assistant). If you're planning to make use of all the horsepower that comes with the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+, then you’re probably going to spend more time playing games than anything else.

To find out how well the phones work in terms of real-world performance, we took some of our favourite, more graphically intensive games for a spin with this new mobile hardware. Basic 2D titles like Candy Crush Saga or simple games like Subway Surfers work fine on even entry-level phones, so they're not on the list below. If you're serious about gaming on your phone, here's what you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

Before playing a game, set the resolution on your Galaxy S8
Borrowing a page from PC gaming, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ support a variety of resolutions. In our Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ review we noted that both phones have a native resolution of 1440x2960 pixels, out of the box, they’re downscaled to 1080x2220.

You can change this in the Settings menu with the help of slider to hit its native 1440x2960 resolution, or drop to 720x1480 pixels. The lowest resolution makes text appear jagged, and also lowers details in-game, to make for a not so ideal experience. The screen sizes coupled with the higher resolution options ensure that there’s little to choose between the other two in most cases. Personally, we prefer the highest resolution, or the WQHD+ option as it is called, with Game Mode switched on. What’s that you ask?

Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ Game Mode, Game Launcher, and Game Tools explained
According to Samsung’s description of it, Game Mode exists to “enhance your gaming experience by making games run more smoothly." And while that might sound simple enough, there’s a lot going on.

Enabling Game Mode in the Device Maintenance section found in Settings also brings Game Launcher, and Game Tools. Game Launcher arranges all your games in one place, and optimises gameplay as per Game Mode settings, while the latter handles tasks like taking screenshots, recording video, and toggling to full screen mode, as not all games support the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+’s 18.5:9 aspect ratio.

PC gamers should be right at home with these settings and options as they essentially mimic the core functionality of Nvidia’s GeForce Experience software for Windows PCs.
